Notes From the Troops
This one was written on a Meals Ready to Eat Cover!
Dear Sir 11 Jan 02
I want to thank you so much for thinking of us.
I am writing you because I received a box full of candy and snacks and I
found out that your group sponsored its shipment.
I am stationed in Oman, in the Middle East.
I am in the Air Force and work in a civil engineer squadron.
The engineers I’m with have turned a dirt patch in the middle of
nothing into a small town. There isn’t much of anything else here. There is
only desert around us and even though it is now early January the weather is
still quite hot during the day. Guess
that’s why they call it a desert. The
snacks from the school children brought smiles to many, many faces.
We can’t buy many of the things that were sent.
So, thank you very much. We
are actually here at this base supporting the war effort so there is no-one
shooting around here. I managed to
save some of the boxes that were sent and I will be sending them to a group of
civil engineers in Pakistan. They
were here with us to build this base and they have gone closer to the action.
There is very little for them there so I know that they will enjoy all
the snacks you and your organization got together for us.
I also gathered some of the items together and gave them to some US Army
troops that came through. They were
in pretty bad shape and enjoyed the sweets more than we did.
I can’t tell you much about the base.
I have to keep that kind of thing a secret.
Obviously, that helps keep us safe.
We now have some pretty good food to eat. A kitchen has been set up and there are large tents made into
a chow hall for us. Speaking of
tents that’s what we all live in here.
The days are pretty much all the same, some sun, some work and some
sleep. Thank you again for thinking
of us. I have a meeting to get to,
guess that will never change even in war. Good
luck to you and God Bless America!
Sincerely MSgt, USAF
